A little over a year ago I wrote here about the challenge our regional PyLadies community had set for 2018: to organize Django Girls workshops in other cities besides Porto Alegre (which had already hosted three workshops). Now I’m back to report on it.
To recap, as we had announced back then:
As we had planned, we also had:
But it didn’t stop there!
On the second semester of 2018, we had two more Django Girls, even happening on the same day, in Rio Grande do Sul:
Last October, during PythonBrasil[14] (the national Python conference) Andressa, from Pyladies Porto Alegre, talked a bit about all the Django Girls in Rio Grande do Sul in the talk “PyLadies e Django Girls promovendo a diversidade na tecnologia - Pyladies Brasil” (PyLadies and Django Girls promoting diversity in technology). The video (in Portuguese) can be watched here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2syVuMQqrQ
I personally think one of the best things that came out of having these many workshops in the region was that they made it possible for former attendees to start contributing to the Python community by returning to the event as coaches and helping other women; and for the coaches to also contribute, by becoming new organizers.
I believe I speak for all of us when I say it was definitely a challenge to take on so many events. I also think it was a great opportunity for all of us to learn a lot about organizing events, about creating welcoming environments (and to prepare things for reuse by new organizers) and to learn about ourselves along the way.
For 2019, there are four workshops being planned already! Django Girls Santana do Livramento (February 2019), Django Girls Pelotas (April 2019), Canoas #2 (May 2019) and Caxias do Sul (August 2019).
The organizers certainly would like to thank all the sponsors who made all these Django Girls possible, in particular, the main sponsors who supported more than one workshop: The Python Software Foundation, Github, Elastic and ThoughtWorks.
Django Girls is a non-profit that teaches programming to women all around the world. Want to help us? Support us!
