Django Girls Akosombo, Ghana.

This blog post was written by Kafui Alordo. Thank you, Kafui :)

I never imagined we could pull this off - owing to several postponements of the workshop - thanks to the organizing team, and the awesome volunteer coaches. We say Ayeeekoooo!!!

Coaches hung out trip to Akosombo Dam

Learning and Tinkering

On Friday, 30th November 2018. 15 ladies, 8 awesome coaches left their comfort zones to converge at the Ghana Korea Germany Church Mission Computer Training School conference room at about 4:00 PM, where we kicked off the evening with an introduction session from all coaches, then branched onto general view of what programming is all about, the tech space, opportunities and women empowerment. Participants and Coaches were in groups - where each team took their ladies through basic Windows Commands after which the rest of the evening was set for coaches and participants hung out to learn and unlearn from each other

On Saturday 1st, December, 2018. We started the day at about 7:30 AM with a lightening talk from Abigail - Pyladies Ghana Lead,

Abigail - Pyladies Ghana lead giving a lightening talk

sharing her experience, and talking about her’s and the coding journey in general with some motivational words encouraging the ladies to do more and take up opportunities within the tech space.

Armed with vim and so much motivation and energy, - we delve into Python, learning the basics, and what we could use it for as a tool - hence Web Application development using the Django Web Framework written in Python.

The Fun

Oh, Yessssssssss!!! we had fun a lot of it I should say - 😊.

There is this saying

All work and no play, makes Django Girls workshop - a dull moment.“

So we decided to treat ourselves after a hard days work with a trip to Akosombo Dam - also known as the Volta Dam, is a hydroelectric dam on the Volta River in southeastern Ghana in the Akosombo gorge and part of the Volta River Authority. Where the country’s electricity is been generated.

All thanks to Noah and Worlali, who made this dream come to pass. It was a joyous moment touring this gigantic facility inspired by the first prime minister and president of the Republic of Ghana - Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Django Girls Akosombo workshop was a success, very intriguing and most daring one for me to say - but thanks be to God it came to pass, and we all are happy to volunteer to be part of it.

We say a very big thank you to @ThePSF, @djangoproject - our main sponsors. To the selfless volunteer coaches and the organizing team, not forgetting the Python Ghana Community and Pyldaies Ghana - you guys rock.

Thank you, Akpenami, Ayeeko!!!
