Django Girls - Melbourne, Australia!

This blog post was written by Rebecca Petrie. Thank you, Rebecca :)

Ahhhh Django Girls. It never ceases to amaze me how inspired I am from attending these events. Every. Single. Time.

On Saturday, November 17th, Common Code, in conjunction with MelbDjango and ReeceTech, opened the doors of our Melbourne, Australia office to a bubbling bunch of excited individuals who all had one sole purpose - to learn more about software development.

In true Melbourne style, we kicked off Registrations in the morning in conjunction with a strong dose of caffeine, provided by social enterprise Society Melbourne - the Melbourne morning coffee is a city-wide tradition not to be messed with!! Whilst we mingled excitedly anticipating the day with our precious lattes in hand, we supported the mission of Society Melbourne’s “Coffee Cart Changing Lives” which aims to break the cycle of youth homelessness by empowering young people with skills and training, specifically through barista training.

Once everyone had arrived (and fed their insatiable need for coffee!) we were able to come together to discuss the days agenda. As with all of our Melbourne Django Girls, we spoke about the tech industry in general, roles adjacent to software developers and some of the practical ways you can break into the Melbourne tech industry. Encouraging the new Django Girls to chat to their coaches throughout the day about their industry experience, we also heard from a few of our badass female coaches who have taken the plunge into tech as a career change or broken into the industry after attending Django Girls!

Inspired and ready to learn, we got stuck into the main event -  The Django Girls workshop! Splitting ourselves into two groups, Beginners and Intermediates, we had 14 amazing Coaches run the workshop for 33 women, 12 of whom had never touched any kind of code before!

The fifth instalment of the Melbourne chapter of Django Girls was a complete success and could not have been possible without the support of our Sponsors, ReeceTech, our event partners Common Code & MelbDjango and from the amazing assistance of the dedicated organising committee and inspiring Coaches - without whom we simply could not have conducted the event!

We want to thank Django Girls int. for assisting the global community to provide practical learning opportunities for women in tech and we can’t wait to run our next event.
