Your Django Story: Akanni Busayo Motunrayo

Tech isn’t just for men!

My name is Akanni Busayo Motunrayo. I am nineteen years old. I am a student and live in  Lagos, Nigeria. I am a Django Girls Lagos alumni.  Attending the Django Girls workshop helped me develop my community building skills.

Since attending the Django Girls workshop, I am actively involved in many tech activities. I am currently an ambassador for Andela at my school.  Andela is a global technology company aimed at discovering the best local talent in software programming. I actively participate in many other tech-based communities in my school and help organize tech events for these communities. One such community is IEEE Extreme.

Thanks to the workshop, I have also organised my own Django Girls event in 2016! The event was held last year and it was a wonderful experience.  This year, I organised another tech event, Leverage, which was sponsored by Andela.  I also attended the first PyCon Nigeria held in September this year in Lagos as well as IEEE Extreme conference.

Besides attending and organising events, I actively program in Java and I do some Android development. I have also delved into control and simulation for a while now. Currently, I just work on volunteer community projects. I am looking into working remotely soon; although managing that along with school could be a bit of a challenge, especially given that I am a perfectionist. I am not yet working in tech since I am an electronic and electrical engineering student in my third year, but I do plan on working in tech after completing my studies.

Attending the Django Girls workshop also helped me realize tech wasn’t just for men and that I could be involved. I got the courage to attend other tech events even though they were mainly men oriented; all because I had been involved in Django Girls!
