This is a post in our Your Django Story series where we highlight awesome ladies who work with Django. Read more about it here.

My name is Muriel Green. I am thirty-nine years old and live in Lawrence, Kansas. I am a former Django Girls KC 2016 attendee. Since attending the Django Girls workshops, I am actively involved in tech-related activities.
I continued learning by taking several computer programming classes online and in person. Because of my desire to build assistive devices, I mostly wanted to learn to write firmware for embedded systems. In order to pursue this, I took the Coursera specialization Internet of Things. I also went through a program called Launch Code.
I have since built an open source Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device that was in the 2017 Hackaday Prize competition. You can view the project here. My entry, entitled “Talker”, did not advance to the semi-finals of the contest, but I plan to enter again this year with a different invention that uses machine vision.
Fifteen months, after attending Django Girls KC workshop, I transitioned from employment as an Office coordinator to working as a software developer. Django Girls KC 2016 was really a turning point for me. It gave me the skills and confidence to learn as much as I could about programming. I accepted a volunteer position as Curriculum Director for Coding & Cupcakes. I have also become an organizer for the python user group PythonKC. My favourite accomplishment was returning to Django Girls KC in 2017 as a mentor!
Django Girls is a non-profit that teaches programming to women all around the world. Want to help us? Support us!
